Standing By The Door is 501c3 non-profit a branch of Church Army USA. We are a 6-month Recovery program that offers housing. Our program provides a safe place for those who struggle with addiction to build a foundation to become a productive member of society. At any given time, we house 128 individuals from all walks of life. Our ministry goes far beyond just housing. We have an intense program that we offer to our residents. We believe that addiction is a spiritual disease, and we approach it as such. Within the 6 months, the residents are encouraged to work on the spiritual program laid out in our curriculum. The spiritual program employs residents to take a deep look at their lives and the damage done by their actions. It drives them to seek and stay in a constant relationship with God and make right the mistakes from the past. Through this process, residents find freedom from their addiction and begin to find their purpose. After completing the 6 months, residents are invited to stay longer and join our Into Action Team. The Into Action Team takes the faith that was given to them through working the spiritual program out into the community to make a difference. Once a month, the Into Action Team goes to volunteer at a local non-profit. Our Into Action Team Members also lead teams to go on missions, sharing the experience of the program that gave them freedom from their addiction to other recovery programs in southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas. Our team has traveled as far as Bakersfield, California and Woodbridge, Virginia to share the message of hope that was given to them.
“Sharing the experience of God’s transforming love with weary and hurting people through compassionate fellowship and life instruction.”
Standing By The Doors embodies a set of core values that guide our community. First and foremost, we recognize that it is all about the people; every newcomer is the most important person. Love and tolerance is our code, fostering an environment where acceptance and understanding thrive. We embrace progress over perfection, striving to improve ourselves daily. As servant leaders, we prioritize service over self-interest, and we trust the process, knowing that even in waiting, divine work is unfolding. Our bond is familial—we may not always agree, but we love and support one another. Shared experiences create a powerful connection, binding us together. Finally, we uphold principles over personalities, choosing what is right over what merely feels good. These values define who we are and how we navigate life’s journey together.
“To see our communities set free from addiction by people finding freedom, finding purpose, and going out into the world and making a difference.”
Standing By The Door was founded in 2013. It was started by Steve and Dyan Baughan upon a request from probation and parole to help local veterans that struggled with addiction. Steve and Dyan started with 1 cottage, across from their house, that held 4 veterans. Standing By Our Veterans was born. Within the next year, the need grew upon further request of probation to help with all people that struggle with addiction. Steve and Dyan decided to move out of their home to convert it into a recovery house, teaching classes in the living room, and shifted from veterans to anyone that struggled with addiction. Standing By Our Veterans became Standing By The Door. Our name originated from the Sam Shoemaker Poem, “I Stand at the Door”. Since 2014, Standing By The Door has opened 4 more men’s houses and 2 women’s houses being able to serve 128 individuals at any given time. The growth from adding additional houses called for a need for a center to teach classes. In 2016, Standing By The Door opened its first center to teach classes. As the growth continued, Standing By the Door outgrew that location and moved to our present location in downtown Branson.
Standing By The Door is a lifeline for those struggling with addiction. Almost 21 million Americans grapple with addiction, yet only 10% receive treatment. Since 2000, nearly 1 million people have lost their lives to drug overdoses. Opioid use disorders affect 24% of those with a drug disorder. Addiction doesn’t discriminate, it effects all facets of life, from the rich to the poverty stricken. This day and age, it's nearly impossible to not know someone effected by addiction or know someone that has been affected.
Standing By The Door has made significant strides in addiction recovery since 2017, housing 128 workforce members in Branson. We’ve seen 311 families reunited over these years. In 2023, 88 residents graduated from our 6-month program, and we’re on track for over 100 completions in 2024. Our outreach expanded in 2022 with a Missions team, initially visiting one recovery program and reaching 15 individuals weekly. Now, two years later, we impact around 100 lives weekly across five programs, Drug Court in Harrison, Arkansas, and weekend workshops for distant programs.
1. It is our goal to double the impact we have in our community and surrounding communities through our missions in 2025
2. To date, we are carrying the message to 5 treatment centers and 1 Jail on a weekly basis-almost doubling the amount of people we are reaching on a weekly basis
3. Our current budget for missions is $2,000.00 monthly. We would like to double this to $4,000 so we can have twice the impact
4. This will cover training, planning, teaching materials, and travel and lodging for all those involved
5. This is a part of a three-year plan to duplicate the program. The increased awareness, and the number of people helped thus far, has created a need for more housing. We don’t ever want to lose our personal touch with the people, so our only option is to duplicate. We believe strongly in being a good steward of God's money, so we want to make sure the need for more housing continues before taking action.
